Phrynosoma blainvillii (coronata), commonly known as Blainville’s Horned Lizards, are currently listed as a California Species of Special Concern and are found at the Morro Dunes Natural Preserve. They inhabit open areas of sandy soil and low vegetation. Their populations have suffered declines throughout most of their range due to habitat loss from human development and the spread of invasive plants. Photo courtesy of Samantha Alvarez.
